The Lyzzerds- Gig recollections
various places, 1965 (?)
We think our first real, paying gig, possibly as the Termites, was at the
Millburn Youth Recreationl Center (MYRC) on Old Short Hills Road in Short
Hills, NJ. Almost certainly arranged through the largesse of Myke's long-suffering
mom, we played, among other things, "Secret Agent," "Walk Don't Run," "Sleep
Walk," and "I Want Your Love."
Two other early gigs that are recalled were in somebody's (McDonough's?)
garage in Short Hills, and of course on the patio of Myke's parents house.
Other gigs around this time were:
- Maplewood Country Club (by the pool, in front of the snack bar in
the middle of the day, with our dangerously ungrounded amps...looking at Sue
Pasquale's, Cathy Fitzmaurice's, Carla Oswald's and Kim Leister's sprouting
tits)
- the Washington Valley Schoolhouse in Mendham (where giggling girls
[Georgie Raupp, Jean Gerth, Sue Kramer] held the microphones for us because
we had forgotten the stands...)
- a Girl Scout Jamboree at the huge Morristown Armory (where girls actually
screamed at us and asked for autographs! Such was the power of Beatlemania
in those days.)
- a church picnic in South Mountain Reservation (where the power was a
gasoline generator)
More detail on these later, if we can remember any.
During this period we also played at many a basement make-out party in
Springfield, Short Hills, etc. It is noted that at one of these parties in
Springfield, Kev's Lafayette amp, obviously as overheated as the attendees,
caught fire! Probably as we played "Louie, Louie" or something equally provocative...
